DMV Vehicle Title Search Services

The Virginia State Police Help Eliminate Auto Theft (H.E.A.T.) provides DMV Vehicle Title Search services to local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to support auto theft related investigations and prosecutions. Mr. Daniel J. Harrington, Research Analyst, conducts title/record searches at the Main Records Office on Broad Street in Richmond. Normally, copies of DMV titles, applications and other records necessary to bring investigations to successful conclusions and to support prosecutions can be provided within seven to ten calendar days after receipt of an authorized request.

Law enforcement agencies must provide a written request with the requestor's name, rank, all mailing and contact information, vehicle VIN, year, make and model. Please note if a certified search is required. Fax all requests to 804-674-2930.

Verify a VIN Online

Click on the following link to a website that will check and verify a VIN online www.analogx.com/contents/vinview.htm This Internet tool will attempt to verify, on an individual basis, each VIN and return information on it. If the VIN is "bad", it will return an "invalid" check digit but will also return information about the vehicle if some of the other digits are correct.
